In
1994
Petula
recorded
a
selection
of
demo
tracks
for
a
potential
new
studio
album
that
remains
unreleased.
The
sessions
were
produced
and
recorded
at
the
New
York
studio
of
Joseph
Baker,
the
replacement
musical
director
for
Blood
Brothers.
Baker
also
acted
as
Petula's
own
personal
US
musical
director
during
this
period.
The
songs
derived
from
predominantly
American
writers
including
David
Friedman,
the
musical
arranger
for
the
hit
Disney
films
'Aladdin'
and
'Beauty
And
The
Beast'.
The
sessions
also
included
the
original
first
recording
of
Grant
Sturiale's
composition
'Here
We
Are',
later
re-recorded
for
the
1998
Varese
Sarabande
album
Here
For
You.
Sturiale
and
Petula
also
collaborated
on
another
track
recorded
at
these
sessions
Prelude
To
Love.
The
song
with
lyrics
by
Petula,
was
recorded
as
a
duet
with
Blood
Brothers
narrator
Domenick
Allen.
Appropriately
these
sessions
also
included
a
recording
of
the
Blood
Brothers
showstopper
Tell
Me
It's
Not
True
with
a
new
rock
/
pop
arrangement.
This
is
the
only
recording
to
have
been
released
from
these
sessions,
originally
featuring
on
the
2000
compilation
Downtown
To
Sunset
Boulevard.
The
demos
were
later
submitted
to
numerous
record
companies
in
the
US
and
UK.
Sony
UK
expressed
interest
in
auditioning
the
material
for
a
possible
release
but
later
declined,
declaring
the
material
wasn't
contemporary
enough
for
a
commercial
release.
Soon
after
the
recording
sessions,
Petula
performed
some
of
the
songs
in
her
live
concerts,
notably
In
This
Life
and
Strangers
Once
Again,
performed
with
the
BBC
Concert
Orchestra
during
her
1996
BBC
Radio
2
concert.
Later
attempts
to
license
certain
tracks
for
the
1999
Readers'
Digest
UK
CD
The
Very
Best
Of
Petula
Clark
proved
difficult
when
Petula's
manager
/
husband
Claude
Wolff
refused
to
give
permission
on
a
royalty
deal,
instead
demanding
unreasonable
advances.
In
1999
the
rhythm
section
of
Seize
The
Day,
a
charity
recording
that
benefited
Broadway
Cares
/
Equity
Fights
Aids
was
recorded
at
Joseph
Baker's
studio
in
New
York.
Petula
has
continued
to
work
with
Joseph
Baker
at
his
New
York
studio,
producing
the
original
2005
demos
for
Driven
By
Emotion
and
To
Memphis,
the
2006
recording
of
Come
Along
With
Me
and
in
2008
a
Clark
/
Sturiale
song
In
The
City
that
is
featured
on
the
2008
compilation
album
