CONCERT NEWS

Petula will return to the Olympia, Paris in her one-woman show for one night only.

When: 14 March at 20:00
Where: The Olympia, Paris

Update: This concert is now cancelled. Commenting on the cancellation, Petula has posted the following message to Facebook: I am deeply distressed and disappointed at the cancellation of my show at the Paris Olympia in March. The company who were to "present" and "produce" the show - Additup - has "gone under"!! In other words, they have gone into liquidation.

I don't need to tell you how unhappy I am with all this. The French musicians and crew who worked so hard with me in Ostende are brilliant, and we were all looking forward to being together again in Paris.

Hopefully, this will happen sometime later this year (if the planned UK tour allows).

I send you all my love, as always. PETULA

In My Own Words

In My Own Words

PETULA CLARK: IN MY OWN WORDS (2 parts)

To celebrate Petula Clark CBE's 80th birthday, and her 70th year on the BBC, Radio 2 presents a new and revealing portrait of the best-selling female artist in British recording history - told for the first time in her own words.

In this uniquely personal programme, Petula remembers her first performance on the BBC Empire Service in 1942 during World War Two; her role in the first ever British TV broadcast; her success as a screen icon (starring alongside Alec Guinness, Fred Astaire and Anthony Newley); and, her string of hit singles in the swinging sixties that established her as an international star.

She also covers the time she made a stand for racial equality in the United States on national television; how she came to lend vocals to John and Yoko's Give Peace A Chance in that Montreal hotel room; discovering The Carpenters at a film wrap party; her five-year Vegas residency in the seventies (the first woman to land such a contract); her show-stopping musical theatre performances in The Sound Of Music, Blood Brothers, and Sunset Boulevard; and finally her joy in her latest album, made here in the UK.

It's a career that spans many aspects of the cultural and performing arts - singer, composer, songwriter, stage and film actress, television star, radio broadcaster, and cartoon strip character. Idolised by everyone from John Lennon, Fred Astaire and Michael Jackson to Johnny Rotten and Michael Ball, she has the longest UK chart career of any British female singer, with a back catalogue which includes recordings in French, Spanish and Italian.

It's a revealing and personal portrait of a lady who has affectionately been known for the last 70 years on British radio as simply "Our Pet". It features the hits Downtown, Don't Sleep In The Subway, My Love, This Is My Song, the Ya Ya Twist, I Know A Place, Sign Of The Times and Colour My World.

Presenter/Petula Clark, Producer/Heather Davies

When: 05 November 2012 @ 22:00. Programme duration: 57minutes
Broadcaster: BBC Radio 2

Part 2 of this documentary will be broadcast on 19 November @ 22:00 and will be presented by Mel C.

Gramophone - September 2012

PETULA ON GLENN GOULD AND ON RECORDING A NEW SONG, 'REFLECTIONS', AS A TRIBUTE TO GOULD THAT WILL FEATURE ON HER NEW ALBUM:

"I have to say that it is a huge regret that I never met him. Sometimes I imagine what it might have been like if we had met, if we found ourselves in a room together. I'm sure I would have liked him. Maybe he'd have played piano for me and I'd have sung - it would have been an amazing moment.

His Bach recordings are just incredible. The strange thing is that I'm recording a new album, and the songs are a combination of new songs and covers such as John Lennon's 'Imagine' (I have a connection with John Lennon, too; apparently I was his favourite female singer). I wanted to make a tribute to Glenn Gould, so my producer came up with a piece of Bach and said, 'Why don't you write a lyric to it?' That really was intimidating. Anyway, it now exists - the song's called 'Reflections' and I am about to grapple with it in the studio. It's not going to be easy for several reasons, but mainly because I can feel Mr Bach and Mr Gould breathing down my neck - no pressure, of course!"

This is an abstract from an article published in the September 2012 issue of GRAMOPHONE - available from all good newsagents.

J'Accuse - Concept Recording

J'ACCUSE...! - THE PASSIONS OF EMILE ZOLA
Petula Clark and Dee Shipman began writing their musical based on the life of French author Emile Zola in 1988, while their first musical Someone Like You was in pre-production. Although the musical was demo'd in 1988 and 1991 a production never came to fruition and the score remained incomplete. In autumn 2010 Stage Door Records commissioned a brand new studio concept recording, assembling an all star cast of West End performers. Recording at London's prolific Angel Studios between January - March 2011, J'Accuse...! features orchestrations and musical direction by Paul Bateman (musical director to Sarah Brightman and Lesley Garrett) and the West End voices of Dave Willetts, Jill Martin and Meredith Braun.

The musical is currently in the pre-production stages, with a new book by Dee Shipman and direction by Dave Willetts. A production is envisaged for 2012.
